Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Inherently Better For SEO

Posted by

In response to a thread on Reddit, Google Browse Advocate John Mueller says there’s no inherent SEO advantage to utilizing WordPress compared to coding a website yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO online forum asks a familiar concern numerous specialists face in their careers.

Is WordPress much better for SEO than coding your own site?

Other variations of that concern include, “is WordPress much better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the response is always the exact same.

WordPress isn’t inherently much better for SEO than any other choice. It’s one of many methods to construct a website that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In action to whether using WordPress is better for SEO than coding your own website, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, but you can focus more on the material if you don’t spend all your time creating a brand-new CMS on your own. (some individuals prefer making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller states, the most significant advantage WordPress provides is the ease of use compared to manually composing code.

However, that’s just beneficial to the site owner. It makes no distinction to Google if a site is developed with WordPress.

This question turns up regularly and is worth reviewing due to the misinformation circulating around WordPress and SEO.

For instance, take the second-most upvoted comment in the Reddit thread straight beneath Mueller’s.

A specific claims, “Google knows WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress websites more efficiently than other CMSs.

That’s incorrect, though the myth of WordPress being much better for SEO continues to persist.
