Google: HTTP/3 Doesn’t Effect SEO

HTTP/3 does not have a direct impact on SEO in spite of its faster efficiency, Google states.

Google Browse Advocate John Mueller exposes a theory that the faster speed of HTTP/3 can straight affect

a site’s SEO. This subject is addressed during the November 2022 edition of Google’s SEO office-hours Q&A session. Joined by the Google Search Relations group, Muller responds to the following question:

Could the use of HTTP/3 enhance SEO since it improves performance?

HTTP/3 uses performance advantages over HTTP/2 and HTTP/3. Nevertheless, the efficiency gains are not likely to make a difference regarding SEO.

Mueller On The SEO Impact Of HTTP/3

Mueller begins his response by mentioning Google does not use HTTP/3 as a ranking aspect or in web crawling:

“Google does not utilize HTTP/3 as a factor in ranking at the minute. As far as I know, we do not utilize it in crawling either.”

Google primarily uses HTTP/1 for web crawling. Googlebot supports HTTP/2 but only uses it when there’s a clear benefit over HTTP/1.

Assistance for HTTP/3 is likely a long way off. Websites that select to embrace it early will not see a direct enhancement in search rankings, Mueller describes:

“In regards to performance, I presume the gains users see from using HTTP/3 would not be enough to significantly affect the core web vitals, which are the metrics that we use in the page experience ranking factor. While making a faster server is constantly an excellent idea, I question you ‘d see a direct connection with SEO just from using HTTP/3. Similar to how you ‘d be hard pushed to finding a direct connection to using a much faster kind of RAM in your servers.”

Mueller gave a similar reaction when asked about HTTP/3 in December 2021.

Nevertheless, he recommended HTTP/3 might “possibly indirectly” impact core web vitals.

Mueller sounds more positive now in stating that there’s no impact.
